Meal Planning Guide

Planning your meals for the upcoming week is the best way to cook nourishing, satisfying meals for your family on a budget. Here are some tips from BI-LO for smart meal planning.

1. Always shop with a list.

Plan your menu before you come into the store and try to stick to the list as much as possible – but also be flexible if you find items in the store on special. Use your personal account shopping list to add items as you plan ahead on the website.

2. Check the BI-LO website to see what’s on sale.

Review the BI-LO weekly ad online and see BI-LO’s other in-store promotions, including available coupons. Plan your menu around items that are on special.

3. See what you already have.

Once you have decided on your main ingredients, check your pantry and refrigerator to see what other ingredients you can use. Especially focus on items that may spoil in the next week or two.

4. Find recipes for your ingredients.

Use online recipe sites, including BI-LO’s own recipes, and search for recipes using the ingredients you have or plan to buy during your shopping trip. If you can get a lot of one item on special, try to find multiple recipes that use that item so it doesn’t go to waste.

5. Map out your meals.

Check your family’s calendar for the week, and then plan meals around it. For nights when everyone’s on the go, avoid fast food by picking up hot, fresh food items at great prices in the BI-LO Deli or What’s for Dinner meals at the BI-LO Meat Counter.

6. Double up.

Make enough of a meal to cover servings for two nights — and make every other night a “leftover night.” It will cut down on cooking time during your busy week and be much more cost-effective when it comes to shopping for ingredients.

7. Think about balance.

Be sure you are planning to work in fruits and vegetables as part of every meal. They don’t always need to be on the side. Be creative: think about fresh fruit salsas, stir-fries, main course salads and soups with vegetables.

8. Plan for breakfast and lunch, too.

To get the most out of your budget, make sure you’re thinking ahead about healthy breakfasts and lunches for the whole family, too — and be sure to add those ingredients to the list.
